1938 Chris-Craft 15 1/2' Classic Wood Mahogany Runabout

We restored a 1938 Chris-Craft Deluxe Runabout named Sly Fox. She was originally built while Christopher Columbus Smith was still heading up the regular operation of Chris-Craft boat manufacturing, which he’d founded. By that time his children were also actively involved in running the business of making classic and antique power boats and engines.

Sly Fox is one of 105 different models of classic wooden Chris-Craft boats available during the 1938 model year. Over 100 models in one year alone was at that point a sort of celebration. After all, just 5 years earlier Chris-Craft’s 1933 product line was limited to just 14 models while it was still suffering from Depression-era losses. But by1936, C-C started to turn a corner financially, generating increased sales and profits.

A true mahogany speedboat, Sly Fox features natural and walnut-stained hardwood that was imported and then air-dried domestically by Chris-Craft exclusively for use in its classic wood boats. She is the Deluxe version of the two Chris-Craft models that shared a 15’ 6” x 5’8” hull. This model offered more power and added features compared with its lower- priced “sister” runabout.

This speedster was available until 1941, when Chris-Craft stopped making pleasure boats and converted its facility to support the war effort during World War II.
